How do I know it's God speaking and not just my own thoughts?

God's voice encourages, lines up with Scripture, and never accuses. That is the test, and it is more reliable than it sounds. If what you are hearing carries condemnation, shame, or a vague sense that you had better perform — it is not Him. Scripture has a name for the voice that talks that way, and it is not Father.

"Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."

Romans 8:1

The accuser introduces you by your sin: *you're the one who lied, the one who failed, the one who always ruins it.* God introduces you by your name — and He will only call you a name He would call Himself. Beloved. Mine. Both voices can be quiet; only one of them is kind.

So test what you hear. Does it agree with Scripture? Does it encourage — even when it corrects? Is there any accusation in it? Correction from God feels like an invitation to come home; accusation feels like a case being built against you. And when you still are not sure, you can just ask: "God, was that you?" He is not offended by the question. He answers it.
